Once the closing costs and other final preparations are addressed, you can start thinking ahead to what situations might happen once you start living in your new house. Here’s how to keep everyone inside safer than ever before.

Change the Locks Ahead of Time

Instead of waiting to have the locks changed the day you move in, make sure you have an appointment beforehand. This appointment can be booked months or even weeks ahead. Sometimes, with only a few days’ notice, you can pull it off. However, it’s also a good idea to give yourself some time to settle into your new home before you have the locks changed. This is especially true of prefabricated homes that you moved into as opposed to new construction that you guided literally from the ground up – you don’t know if former owners discarded their keys or not.

Wait Until Closing is Done

Closing on a new home can be a confusing process, even if you initiated a custom build and didn’t choose a home in an existing development. Some of the best advice we can give you is to wait until the closing paperwork is filed and everything is squared away. This means that the house is yours in full. That’s why you should wait until a day or two after closing is finalized.

Get Your Information Together

Finally, take some time to collect all of your relevant paperwork. In other words, get your information together. Figuring out the number of locks you’ll need to change can be tricky, so ask your family members to help out whenever possible. You’ll also need to consider the types of locks that need replacing, how much you can afford, how many new keys you will need, and the security level of the home – you may or may not need a home security system or automation systems to help “smarten” your home, if such features weren’t already included in the original design.
