Choosing Tile for Your Custom Home

Choosing Tile for Your Custom Home

There are literally thousands of great tile options you can choose for your home.

There are literally thousands of great tile options you can choose for your home. First and foremost, you will want to consider where in your home the tile will be. Some places you would typically find tile are:

  • Kitchen and Bath backsplashes
  • Bathroom floor
  • Tub and shower
  • Kitchen counter and floor
  • Laundry room
  • Basement

And more!

Durability

Obviously, you want your tile to last as long as possible, but some materials are tougher than others. Do your research and thoroughly weigh the pros and cons of any material you are thinking about.

Ceramic/ porcelain– Man-made ceramic and porcelain tile materials are rated on a scale known as the PEI scale. The scale goes from 1 to 5, one being not resistant to damage and 5 being very resistant. The class you need will depend on where you want to put it. Your custom home designer will be able to help you narrow down the choices.

Natural materials– Because natural stone is not man-made, it cannot be accurately measured on the PEI scale. However, humans have been using various types of stone for flooring for thousands of years, so obviously some of them will work fine for your home. Talk to your designer about natural stone tile options as well.

Size Matters

In home design, size matters. There are some sizes of tile that just won’t work for certain spaces. Using larger tile will make your space feel larger, while smaller options are typically better suited for backsplashes and design accents, such as tile mosaics. Give your designer a description of the feel you would like for the space and they will help you choose the perfect tile options!
